From the Gaul Family Home Page 3/29/97: "The surname Gaul, Gall, Galle, Gaule, Gall, Gawl, etc. extends backward in time to the several tribes of Gauls who inhabited parts of Switzerland, the Rineland, France, the Low Countries, and the British Isles. The original Gauls were Celtic folks whose basic tongue was Gaelic.

The actual spelling of the name in any one family was of little significance until after the 1800's. The earlier Gauls might have a father named Gall, and uncle named Galle, and the children named Gaule. This spelling settled down to one form in the early nineteenth Century in each family; but the earlier variability has done nothing to ease the tracing of family lines.

While the word "Gall-" means stranger or alien in Gaelic (hence the Irish names of "Fingal-" the fair Gaul-", "Gaulstown" the Strangers Village, Galway, Gaulskill, Galloway, etc. these geographic terms were applied before the year 1100 in Ireland. Subsequent invasions by aliens did not achieve and "Gall-" prefixes.

Another approach to the name Gaul, attributes it to the families who admired St. Gall, an Irish or Scottish lad who became a priest, and with St. Columban went to continental Europe to establish Christianity. St. Gall was born about 550 AD. The present monastery of St. Gall was established by this man when he built a simple monkish cell there. Later, Charles Martel had it converted in to a Benedictine Monastery. During the middle ages it became a center of learning and culture. St. Gall died about 615 or 645 AD, and the Feast of St. Gall is celebrated on October 16th in some areas (even today).

The earliest Gauls on record with genealogy, appear in Lincolnshire, when Peter Galle (1272 AD) is recorded as having a son, Philip Gall in 1292.

Other early Galls appear as single individuals, devoid of much ancestry. They simply pop up in records and become lost again. Such as Hugh Galle of Shropshire in 1295. In 1550 Julyan Gawle of London was buried at St. Michael, Cornhill - presumably he was dead at the time. Another Londoner, David Gaul appeared in about 1710."

Interesting geographical fact: Waterville, NY - George Eastman was born in Waterville, NY on July 12, 1854 and died March 14, 1932. In 1892, he founded the Eastman Kodak Company while working as a clerk at a local bank. During that time, he became interested in photography. In fact he became so engrossed with photography, that he brilliantly redefined the process for producing photographic plates, which he soon began to manufacture after it's completion. He set up the company that later became known as Eastman Kodak.

In 2003, Ed and Gayle Denné visited Aberdineshire in Scotland and found the large plantation where Eliza's parents met, and the home in which she was raised. In the center square was a monument to several Highlanders who had died in the service of their country including Eliza's brother George. The town was as if time stood still - the granite buildings, the town park, the surrounding rolling hills. In an odd way, it felt like going home again.
