Includes NotesNotes for John Frederich Denne:
As told by Edward C. Denné, Jr. March 18, 1997.

"My father's folks came to visit us at 720 9th Ave. West. Our home had a hole in the ground called a basement, but just large enough for a coal hot air furnace and a small coal bin. My grandfather, being a good coal miner, took on the job of digging out another room. In the midst of that digging I perched myself on the top of the ground grandfather was digging. He asked me menacingly to move. I didn't stir. One more time he asked. I didn't move. I must have been a stubborn little kid. At that point I did move for my grandfather proceeded to paddle my hind end quite boldly. That was the only time he ever paddled me. The room he carved out was used by my dad to make home brew (beer) during prohibition. I can remember yet the brew fermenting a crockery pot and then being funneled into bottles and capped with a special capping device. It was rather scary sometimes to hear a bottle pop it's cap during the night.

When I was in second grade at Graymont Elementary I watched the older kids sit on the parallel bar in the playground, do a backwards rotation into a giant swing doing a loop and landing on their feet on the ground. I must have thought that was pretty neat for I tried it when no one was looking. I landed on my head. That may account for some of my shortcomings in later years." -- as told by Edward C. Denné, Jr. April 5, 1997

April 7, 1998 from E. C. Denné Jr.
If the truth be known as best I know it, when my dad moved South (he was the only Denne to move South) and then married mom, she asked grand dad (dad's dad) how to pronounce Denne. Whatever he told her, she figured out it should have an accent. I guess my dad went along with it. The rest of the family just pronounced it Denny which caused a bit of a rift in the family when we moved up North. Uncle Fred and family always pronounced it Denny although the spelling was Denne. People in Edgewood wondered why there were two pronunciations. Grand dad and Grand mother always pronounced it Denny, spelled Denne, as did the relatives in Portage, PA. Now you know the "Whole
Story". By the way, there ought to be a trail back through Portage, PA for the Denne tribe who came from Alsace Lorraine.

My Uncle Jake Clemens from Portage was Tipstaff in the Court House in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. If you look at a map you will see that Portage is halfway between Altoona and Johnstown. My grand dad helped pull the dead out of the Johnstown flood.
