Henry T. Perry led an active life and had a varied career. At fifteen he was a clerk in a grocery store, and before he was twenty, had a grocery of his own, and later, one on the Erie Canal. Then he engaged in boating for a number of years, then was captain of the States Scow for four years, and then was section superintendent for two years. Then for many years he was engaged in the quarrying business at Little Falls. The preparation of the site and the foundations for the present Methodist and Presbyterian Churches were his work, as well as the widening of the roadbed of the NYC [New York Central Rail Road], and of several dams in the Mohawk at Little Falls. All of this work was done before 1876. In 1835 he was a passenger on the Lake Erie steamer "George Washington" when it was burned in June, 1835, fifty-three were saved out of 159 passengers. The steamer was racing with the "North America" at the time.

In 1878 during the yellow fever scourge in Memphis, when the city was quarantined against the rest of the nation, he volunteered as a nurse, was accepted and sent there, and remained for six months, until the quarantine was lifted. About a year after his return he married Mrs. Hannah Pratt and for the remainder of his life did gardening.
