Phillip Tourje was an "Easterner" of French descent {Letter 8/25/1988 from Jane Anne Stewart Render}. Uncle George Tourje, Postmaster for many years at Broad Albin, NY, wrote me that he had all the family records and their statements are correct. He stated that he never saw his grandfather Tourje but once. His pension records I {Bob Borsching 1/18/96} obtained from the War Department in Washington).

The Revolutionary War Muster Rolls of Massachusetts say that he enlisted in the MA Line as a private Feb 27, 1777, giving his residence as Swanseay and his birth year as 1738. He would have been thirty-nine when he enlisted. The US Pension List for 1835 states that he was placed on the pension roll from Saratoga County NY June 30, 1818, at the age of 80, with an annual allowance of $96 and at the time of his death, had received a total of $754.16. (he must have died about eight years after his pension was granted or about 1826. Uncle George states the he served seven years in the Revolutionary Army.) He married Desire Bump, she was a Yankee, and in 1840 she was residing with her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Berness, at Galway, Saratoga County. He married but once, and had several children; the daughter above mentioned; a son who was the grandfather of Judge Tourje of Chautauqua County, NY and very prominent during the Civil War days; and a son, Jiles, the father of Henry T. Perry.

According to the Commission in the Dept of the Interior, Bureau of Pension Records, the following was recorded in the US files (taken from a letter date Jan 24, 1929 and signed by Winifred Scott, Commissioner).
