Desire Tourje was born with the same last name as her future husband, Philip Tourje, since they were cousins (their fathers were brothers).

It is reported that in the winter or spring of 1835 Desire Tourje was taken to the Poor House of Herkimer County where she resided until June or July of that same year, when she was taken out and she lived with John Hale and or his relations for about a year, when she was taken ill with palsy and lost the use of her right arm and leg, so was then necessarily returned to the Poor House.
