 Includes NotesNotes for Thomas Baker:
The Bakers are a very old, very numerous, and distinguished family.

The first Baker in East Hampton was Thomas, who came out of England in 1639 and was enrolled as a Free Planter at Milford, Conn., one of the original six towns in New Haven Colony. Milford was organized on November 29, 1639. Thomas Baker was born September 29, 1618, at Hothfield near Ashford, which is not far from Maidstone in Kent. He married probably in New Haven, on June 20, 1643 (some say 1640) Alice, daughter of Ralph Dayton, who was to become another founder of East Hampton. Alice was born May 22, 1620 and baptized in St. Mary's Church, Ashford. Thomas and Alice Dayton Baker were in East Hampton by 1650.

The Baker family Bible printed in London 1599 was presented to the Pennypacker L.I. Historical Collection at the East Hampton Free Library by Samuel C. Hedges and his sister, Mrs. Morton Pennypacker, both descendants of Thomas Baker 1, who set down its family records. The Library also has the excellent "Ancestry of Samuel Baker of Pleasant Valley, Steuben County, N.Y. ---" compiled by Frank Baker, 1914, among other Baker material. The late John Baker of Amagansett compiled his family line, 1850; this, and information furnished by the late Jonathan Baker of East Hampton, aided Judge Hedges with his brief genealogy in 1897. Edward Mulford Baker Strong and members of the Baker family have been helpful in preparing the following genealogy.
