"Elias Stewart of Clarendon" by Molly Pierce King
Elias Stewart was born on March 23, 1742 at Voluntown, Connecticut son of Thomas and Anne Rogers Stewart. He was grandson of Alexander Stewart who came to Voluntown from Ballymena, Ireland. In 1769 he married Sarah Stewart, the daughter of Oliver and Rebecca (Pendleton) Stewart of Stonington, Connecticut.

Elias and Sarah Steward came to Clarendon with their family in 1779. It is believed that some members of Sarah's family were already at Clarendon at that time since Edmund and Oliver Jr. (probably her brothers) took the Freeman's Oath in Clarendon before 1790 and were deeded land at a much earlier date.

Land deeds of Clarendon show that Elias Stewart bought land on East Street from Elisher Bordman on august 6, 1781. This land was once the property of an original proprietor of a New Hampshire Grant, Caleb Willard, prior to Bordman's ownership.

Elias and Sarah built upon this property, now the Haven Hill Orchards, and took up residence with their ten children. The map of Shrewsbury Vermont land holdings prepared by K. S. Fisher of the Shrewsbury Historical Society also shows that Elias had part ownership in two plots of 200 acres just over the hill from his Clarendon property.

Elias died in 1792 and his land holdings passed to his heirs as recorded July 5, 1793. He and Sarah are buried in a sand hill cemetery on East Street in Clarendon, VT, about one mile south of Mill River. Their graves are in the northeast part of the cemetery about thirty feet south of the west end of the wall running down the north side of the cemetery.

Darius Steward, a great grandson of Elias and Sarah, wrote in 1933 as follows: "Elias' son Thomas Steward II, witnessed the interment and with rifle protected the graves from insult by the plowman during his lifetime."
