"I recall my grand mother saying that Jefferson Davis' cousin was a frequent visitor to her mother Jane Tinkle nee Davis, daughter of Nathan Davis, Jr. (who was living with Jane Davis Tinkle at the time of his death).

Jane's husband John Tinkle , John's mother Sarah Tinkle and Jane's father Nathan J. Davis, Jr. and Jane were all living together. John died of Pneumonia December 1883. By April 1, 1884, Sarah, Nathan and finally Jane succumbed to Pneumonia. Nathan Jr. was the inheritor of a league of land granted to his father by Mexico. The land still remains in Davis family. John Tinkle's homestead was moved to West Texas by a descendant where it ultimately burned. I'm told that he had the home rebuilt like the original.

A picture of Jefferson Davis has very distinct features. I was struck by the remarkable resemblance to my mother and grandmother's nose. My wife and I have often wondered who my youngest son, David looked like. I often said he looked quite like the mail man (in jest). Upon retrieving the picture of Jefferson Davis, it was amazing to notice the marked likeness of facial appearance (eyes, eyebrow, lips and cheeks) of David. I've always noticed the distinctive nose of my mother. Almost a hump but not, almost turns down at end but doesn't quite. I was always struck by this.

Since my grand mother was 18 when Jane died, she obviously was of age to remember a visit from Jefferson Davis. We now know that Morgan David migrated to America in 1684 on the ship Vine with wife and son John. He settled in Welsh Settlement of Marion Township, Pennsylvania. John's son Rezin Davis and brother (Jeff's grand father) were both in the Revolutionary War.

Obviously, information available today is considerably more plentiful today than when the Davis's of Savannah Georgia was written. I feel that current information provided by Jefferson Davis in his papers and original sources available today are plausible for the conclusion that we are a cousin to Jefferson Davis. Mr. Davis was vague about the information (unsupported by documentation by his biographers) of Evan Davis. He didn't know the name of his, Evan, wife. He was of the opinion that Evan Davis was born in Wales. In reality, per the ship manifest, Morgan David had son John who was born in Wales while Evan was born in Pennsylvania, not Wales.

I am beginning to ramble, however, I would be interested in all your opinions as to this information."

The Davis Family Morgan David

Born Luntwidvoyrde Glamorganp Wales circa 1622- 23. He was a witness to the marriage agreement of his cousin, Julian, daughter of Richard David, Sent., and John Thomas, Gent., dated 10 August 1637. He was a witness to a lease of lands -from Ross Williams to his father in Carmarthon Co., dated e July 1673. He married Catherine _________ and settled in Lithranscastle, Pembrokshire. (circumstances indicate that he was closely related to William and Francis Powell, who came to Pennsylvania. It is not known if through his mother or his wife). From the dates of the births of his last three children which are recorded in Marion Meeting Records (MSS Hist. Soc. Penn) he had at least one son born in Wales, I.E. John.

He came to the province of Pennsylvania prior to 1686 and probably came on the ship "Virell which 17.7.ma., 1684 bringing many Welsh families to settle in Marion, Haverford, and Radnor. (Welsh Settlement, Pennsylvania, Browning, p.505) Morgan David owned by a triparty deed dated 19.6 mo. 1686, and signed by Richard Davies, Morgan David and William Howell, a parcel of land, 100 acres, in Marion Township. Land deeds of the Haverford School and College show that the College land was originally part of the 410 acres which Richard Davies conveyed 19.6 mo. to Thomas Gilis, Gent., Morgan David, Husbandman, and Francis Shoemaker. (Welsh Settlement of Penn., Browning, PP 202 - 227). He was freeholder and owned 354 acres of land (Welsh Founders of Penn., Vol i. p. 157).

Catherine David was a witness for the defendant, 5.4 mo. 16es in the case of Henry James VS James Brown, defendant. "Catherine Davis being attested in open court declareth for ye defendant that she did hear Henry James order James Brown to give to Zacary Patricke one gallon of rum to make haste with ye pipe staves and ye tymber at Nachcocme Creeke.11 (Rec. of Ct. This was probated by his widow, Catherine, who was sole executrix, 18.7 mo. 1895. (Welsh Settlement Pa., Browning D. 245; Gen__ Pa., Vol II p.51.). His estate to go to his two eldest sons, John and Evan, he mentions son David, and leaves legacies to daughters Catherine and Elizabeth, and to the meeting house of Haverford; he mentions property called "Chestnut-well"' and "Beech-well". William Powell Morris Llewellyn, Francis Howelly and David Lawerence are named overseers. Witnesses to this will are Robert Owen, Robert Powell, and John Humphreys.

One hundred acres of land mentioned in the triparty deed was conveyed by the relict and the overseers to James Thomas by deed 8.3 mo. 1695 James Thomas immediately reconveyed the same to his son, James Thomas. Catherine, Morgan David's widow, married the second time to Evan Harry, of Marion, 3.11 mo. 1697 this was witnessed by John, Evan and a Robert David (MSS Hist. Soc. Pa.). Evan Harry owned 164 acres of land in Radnor in December 1701, and 204 acres in Marion in April 1704. He died 1718-19, and Catherine his widow, removed to Pencader Hundred New Castle County, Delaware. She is shown as joining in 1720, subscribing as "Catherine Evan Harry". (Peneader Rec. p. 23). The estate of Evan Harry was not Administered and settled until 19 Feb. 1723. (Gen. Co. Pa., vol vii p.264; et rec. Alae.). Catherine married for the third time James Thomas.
