Claims to the US Government for Property taken by Union Soldiers during the CIVIL WAR.

Petition: Davidson Blackwell, Walker County, Ala Claim # 6635 Holly Grove 5-22-1871, attorney C.W. Bennett, Washington D.C. Stated that on 3-29-1865, at his resident, a raiding party belonging to Major General Wilson took the following: 2 Mares $300.00, 200 Pounds Bacon @ .25 - $50.00, 50 Bushels of Corn @ 1.50 - $75.00, 400 Binds fader (fodder) $8.00, 150 Pounds Flower (flour) $12.00, 2 Bushels Dried Fruit $3.00, and 20 Fowl $5.00.

Witnesses to taking of the property: John Blackwell, Holly Grove in the State of Alabama, and George McDade, Holly Grove in the State of Alabama

WITNESSES to prove his loyalty to Union:
James A. Hendon, Walker Co, Ala., and Absolam Shirly, Walker Co, Ala.

George W. McDade Walker Co, Ala., James D. McDade

On 22 Dec., 1871, John Brown, Judge of Probate and Special Commissioner, to take testimony in cases before "The Commissioners of Claims," now pending before them against the United States, and as Probate Judge in and for the County of Walker and the State of Alabama, certified that DAVIDSON BLACKWELL of Walker County, ALABAMA, the claimant in this case, and as a witness, and Absolom Shirly, John P. Blackwell and George W. McDade of Walker County, as witnesses, and Jery F. Files. as counsel, came before him at Holly Grove, Alabama on the 22 d day of December 1871 and testified as follows:

DAVIDSON BLACKWELL answered to standard interrogatories:

1. "At home on my farm. I was there in person all the time and was farming all the time."
2. "At home on my farm Holly Grove, Walker County., Ala. and was personally there all the time and did not change my residence all the time."
3. "I never did."

5. "I have in August, 1865, under the proclamation of the president- I did not. I done nothing to ask pardon for."

34. "I can cheerfully say from the bottom of my heart that I endorse every sentiment contained in the question and complied with it as far as the circumstances of the case permitted me to do so."

1. DAVIDSON BLACKWELL b: 10-07-1809 and Sophia Henry, b: 1807, m. 5-29-1832, Carroll County, Ga. He died at 77 on 6-22-1887 and she died at 73 on 3-21-1880.

2. He was a member of the primitive Baptist Church for 54 years and she was a member of the Baptist Church for 37 years. They were former members of Bethel Baptist Church, Holly Grove, according to the book," Gutteries Family Book, Gutteries Allied Families." Both are buried Scott Cemetery, Walker CO., Ala.

Walker County, Alabama Wills - Oct. 04, 1887 Davidson Blackwell's Last Will and Testament:

" I, Davidson Blackwell, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following.

First, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, MATILDA BLACKWELL, the sum of one seventh part of all my effects except beds and bedding.

I give and bequeath unto my oldest son, ALEXANDER H. BLACKWELL, one seventh of all my effects except beds and bedding.

I give and bequeath unto my youngest son, WILLIAM R. BLACKWELL, one seventh of all my effects except beds and bedding.

To my oldest daughter, SARAH E. McDADE, I give and bequeath one seventh of all my effects and one half of my beds and bedding added thereto to be equally divided by her and her youngest sister, BUNAVISTA NORRIS.

To the heirs of my deceased daughter, MARY A. DAVIS, I give and bequeath one seventh of all my effects excepts beds and bedding.

To my youngest daughter, BUNAVISTA MORRIS, I give and bequeath one seventh part of all my effects, and in addition thereto, I give her one half of my beds and bedding to be equally divided between her and her oldest sister, SARAH E. McDADE.

I hereby constitute and appoint WILLIAM L. DAVIS as guardian for the heirs of my daughter MARY A.DAVIS;

and I also constitute and appoint MARGARET N. BLACKWELL as guardian for the heirs of my deceased son, JOHN P. BLACKWELL.

I hereby appoint my youngest son, WILLIAM R. BLACKWELL and my son in law, GEORGE W. McDADE with full and legal power to take all my effects, real and personal, in charge forthwith after my death and sell into the highest bidder or equally divide it as my heirs or a majority of them may think best. And I want Wm. BLACKWELL and GEORGE W. McDADE to have reasonable compensation for all their trouble. And I further avow and declare this to be my last will and testament and that it is my desire this be my desire that it should be carried out to a letter and should any of my heirs or guardians for heirs or minor heirs become dissatisfied with, and try to break said will or any part thereof, that the parts or several parts of such disaffected heirs or guardians shall be taken from them and equally divided amongst the remainder of my heirs and guardians equal, the same as the rest of my property.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 4th day of October in the year of our lord 1884."

SHIELDS, Judge of the Court of Probates and for said County, to hereby certify that the written instrument of writing has this day, in said court, and before me, as the judge thereof, been duly proven, by the proper testimony, to be the genuine last will and testament of DAVIDSON BLACKWELL, deceased and that said will, together with said proof thereof, have been recorded in my office, in Book of Wills No. 1, pages 51-2-3 & 4. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal of said Court this 25th day of July 1887.
