Lope A. Derro was born in Esperanza, Agusan del Sur. His father, Enrique Derro, a native of Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur was a pioneer teacher in Mindanao island the Philippines during the late 1920's. Lope's mother also a pioneer teacher in Agusan contry-Arafiles Derro is an Ilocana. Together with Lope's other younger sibling Roberta Derro, they both strives the swamps and giant rivers of Agusan province as children. Later on, Lope was orphaned of a mother at a young age of 15 years old. His father Enrique remarry an Agusanon which he had another sibling Vicente Derro.
At the outbreak of World War II in the pacific in which the invading Japanese Imperial Army had their final stage of attack in Bataan and Corregidor, Lope joined the guerrilla movement in which he was drafted as a recon patrol specialist, task to deliver sensitive intelligence information to different guerilla base camp in Mindanao islands. After the war, he was enlisted in the defunct Philippine Constabulary in Davao City which during that time insurgency in Mindanao is in the height of Hukbalahap & Moro rebelion. While in the service, he married a lovely "Waray-waray" named Gertrudez Gonzales and bear 10 children in which all its initials bears the spelling of his name to wit:

As a Constable Sergeant he was selected to join the Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea (PEFTOK)however he declined due to his strong devotion to his native land and family. While serving as the communication NCO, PC Batallion in Davao City he finds himself pursuing his education by taking up his Bachelor of Law degree in Notre Dame University Davao and finishing it with flying colors. Later he was reassigned in PC/INP Provincial Headquarters in Patin-ay, Prosperidad Agusan Del Sur and settled in Bah-bah, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur until his retirement from the Constabulary service as a 2nd Lieutenant. His post retirement even pushed him to serve the government as a civil servant in the Department of Public Works and Highways as a Legal & Administrative Supervisor. Among Lope's Children Leopoldo went in the Philippine Air Force, Enrico & Pedro in the Philippine National Police, Armando is a successful businessman, Danilo is an Agro-specialist of the Department of Agrarian Reform, Erlinda a teacher, Reynaldo a non-uniformed police, Raymundo a Geodetic Engineer and Orlando an Economist.
Today, Lope has 18+ grandsons & grand daughters, in which two had followed in his footstep as a Lieutenant and Inspector in the Philippine Army and Bureau of Fire Protection respectively, one in the Social Work, another a Communications Engineer,one as a commerce and some are still in schools and universities.
Lope A. Derro is a true father of his family who geared them towards being good citizens of the country once he have served. A true patriot and a servant. One of the unsung hero of the Filipino's hurdle for Freedom!
