JOBIN of Houghton County, Michigan & Province of Quebec

Updated April 16, 2001

About Our Family Research

Leo Joseph Jobin was born 1908 in Torch Lake TWP or Point Mills near Dollar Bay, Houghton County, Michigan. Parents: Hermenegille Jobin and Emma Dubord. Leo had 3 older sisters and 3 older brothers. Emma died 1910; Hermenegille died 1916. Likely Hermenegille was a lumberjack. Leo was later adopted by the Champagne family of Shawinigan Falls, P.Quebec, Canada; who had 19 living children of their own. Leo was orphaned at age 8, fended for himself for a time and then was adopted. He worked as a lumberjack, sometimes as a canoe & pack carrier for ?fur traders.
There likely is a connection to the Jobin family that originated in Normandie, France in 1500's, but the direct links have not been established as I cannot find out much about Hermenegille at all. Not sure if Hermenegille was born in Quebec, Houghton County (or Detroit suburb?) Michigan; not sure where he got married; not sure even if he died in Houghton County. All I know is that he was in Houghton County in 1908 when Leo was born.
Leo's birth certificate, interestingly, lists his father as "M. Jobin" (rather than Hermenegille - this was the listing on the baptism papers). Emma Dubord was listed on the birth certificate as "Amelia Jobin", not even giving her maiden name. My guess is that the baptism papers from St. Francis Church, Dollar Bay, were more accurate. The birth certificate lists residence as Torch Lake TWP Houghton County Michigan. The baptism papers filed only 7 days later lists the residence as Point Mills, Houghton COunty, Michigan.
