This is an indepth study of the Scritchfield's (or however they spelled their name)that passed through Rowan, Surry and Wilkes Co. North Carolina. The information has been obtained from original court, land and tax records. Rev war applications, LDS microfilm of original court and land records. A few items have been taken from books, these items are well documented.
The first record is of a John Crutchfield found in Rowan Co in Oct 1757, when he appears in open court with Jacob McKinney to prove the last will and testement of John Garrett. There are two known separate families in Surry Co. by 1778. It is unknown if this John Crutchfield is the same John that settled on the northside of the Yadkin River and was appointed constable in 1768 on the upper Yadkin River. In 1771 Surry Co. was formed from Rowan Co.

A visit to the North Carolina archives provided further information on the original family. In the Surry Co. tax file year unknown was a tax list for Richard Murphy's district. It is believed this list is for the year 1775.

William Perry Johnson stated he had not located tax records for 1776. In his book "Surry and Wilkes Counties, North Carolina Taxables, 1771 - 1800" Vol I. The year 1777 "Jabez Jervis District" sheet 3 " Eleven categories, Improvements; "Vallue"; "Negros"; Value; Horses; Value; cattle; Value; Cash in Hand; Money on "Intrest"; Stock in trade."

"Joseph Winston His Entry Book Surry county, NC Land Entries 1778-1781." "Entry number 1461. Thomas Woodruff enters 50 acres of land in Surry County, on the N. side of the Yadkin River joining John Scritchfields (Deceased) old line beginning at the upper end and at his old beginning, running north, then up the river including whereon Amos Scritchfield now lives. ( No date given, the following entry was dated March 1779)." This information sent to me by Jim Franklin. No deed or warrant has been found for this entry.
The early records appear to indicate that John Sr. is the father of Samuel, Nathaniel, Arthur, John Jr., William and an additional record indicates there is a good possibility that Amos was also a son. From the entry in Joseph Winston's book it would appear that John Sr. died by 1779.
