The Staley Family of Appanoose County, Iowa

About Our Family Research


Joel Staley was born in Virginia in 1801. In 1802,the family moved to Jefferson County,Virginia. In 1818, the family moved again to Somerset County, Pennsylvania. In 1823 Joel married Matilda Skinner who was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Joel and Matilda removed to Athens County, Ohio in 1825 where one child was born, then on to Perry County, Ohio where 5 of their 9 children were born. In 1839, the family moved to Lee County, Iowa where another child was born. Within 2 years, they had moved to Davis County, Iowa where 2 more children were born. Their oldest daughter, Isabel Staley Mathews, died in 1846 just after her 1st wedding anniversary and, in 1849, Matilda Skinner Staley died from cholera. Joel remarried within 5 months to Malvina (Phelps)Vermilya (widow of Robert Vermilya) and settled in Appanoose County, Iowa in 1850. Joel Staley died in 1887 in Appanoose County, Iowa.
