View Tree for Jean MarotJean Marot (b. 1677, d. November 1717)

Jean Marot was born 1677 in France, and died November 1717 in Williamsburg, York County, Virginia. He married Anne Pasteur.

 Includes NotesNotes for Jean Marot:
Jean Marot migrated to Virginia on board the ship Mary and Ann (from the list Huguenot Refugees on Board Ship Mary and Ann, August 12, 1700, Virginia, James City) in 1700. He kept a tavern at Williamsburg. He must have married Ann Pasteur some time after 1700. They had three daughters Edith, Anne and Rachel.

Jean Marot made his will on August 31, 1717 which was proved in York County December 16, 1717. His death appears to have been brought about by the violence of another tavern owner named Francis Sharpe, who was remanded to the public jail at Williamsburg on November 18, 1717, for the murder of John Marot. Francis Sharpe was apparently never convicted as he was issued a license to keep ordinary a couple of year later.

Jean Marot, a Huguenot, born in France in 1677, of the family which produced the poet and hymn writer, Clement Marot, came to Virginia in 1700 and served for several years as secretary to William Byrd of Westover. In 1705 he was granted a license to operate an "ordinary" (an inn or tavern) in Williamsburg, at that time the Capitol and center of social life in Virginia. He continued there until 1717 when he was murdered, or rather died of a wound inflicted by Francis Sharpe who was indicted and tried for murder. His Will dated Aug. 13, 1717, was probated on Dec. 16, 1717.
