Empress Matilda de Normandy (daughter of King of England Henry "Beauclerc" Normandy I and Princess of Scotland Matilda Atheling Canmore) was born Abt. 1104 in Winchester, England, and died September 10, 1167 in Abbey of Notre Dame des Prés, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France.

She was designated Henry I's heir, and on his death (1135), cousin Stephen seized the
throne and Matilda invaded England (1139) inaugurating a period of inconclusive civil war.
She and her second husband (Geoffrey Plantagenet) captured Normandy and in 1152
the Treaty of Wallingford recognized Henry II as Stephen's heir.

Burke says she was betrothed in her eighth year (1119) to Henry V of Germany, her
first husband.
