He married (1) Henrietta Massey. He married (2) Sarah Stockett on July 10, 1735 in All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel, Maryland137.

JOSEPH MAYO, SR.'S, will was proven 18 February 1786;
Executors: Sons Joshua, John, Isaac. (Joshua was the son of Sarah Stockett; John and Isaac were sons of Henrietta.) Henrietta, his wife, and all children above or their heirs or representatives were heirs. Thomas bad a previous share of the estate; now, Thomas' heir or representative was to get 10 shillings. His second son, Joseph, also had a previous share of the estate. Joshua got the plantation on which Joseph Mayo, Sr. lived; John, all lands in Herring Creek Swamp (sic) including Crutchley's Choice; Isaac, two tracts - Collierby and Brewer's Chance. Two tracts of land called Fortune and Selbys Marsh, when a dispute was over, were to be divided between two sons, James and Samuel. Also, James got a weaver's loom and furniture; Samuel, silver shoe and knee buckles.

To heirs of Mary Linthycum, 10 shillings; Elizabeth Beard, Ann Jenifer and Margaret Mayo all got 10 shillings; Sarah and Henrietta each got a State of Maryland Certificate: Henrietta for £27+; Sarah for £200. Grandson Joseph Jenifer to receive State of Maryland Certificate for £70 + for education. Edward was not in the will.

Joseph Mayo, Sr. had previously purchased Selbys Marsh and Selbys Stapp in 1768 transferred Gaither's Collection in 1769 to Joshua Ridgely and bought Baldwin's Addition between Herring Creek and Tree Islands and Dorcus his Chance or Choice, as aforementioned, in April 1769, Callierby in 1774, and Brewer's Chance in 1782 of which some land may have been given to his sons previously.

The first 10 children of Joseph Mayo, Sr. and Henrietta - are recorded in the All Hallows Episcopal Church, Anne Arundel Co. Register, 1711-1857, (M221) p. 59, MSA. Though not in the All Hallows Register, Samuel Mayo is mentioned in Joseph Mayo, Sr.'s will as "my son."

In Joseph Mayo, Sr.'s will, Elizabeth Mayo is called Elizabeth.

Joseph Mayo was listed in the 1776 census with a family consisting of 3 white males over 16, 3 white females, 5 white children, 8 black males, 5 black women, and 7 black children. Joseph Mayo's inventory after his death was valued at $702 and included 10 slaves, 5 horses, 20 hogs, 12 sheep, 12 cattle, valuable furniture and china. The inventory was done by Mary and Thomas Mayo and signed on Sept 18, 1788, by Hannah, his executrix.

Grandson Commodore Isaac Mayo said that Joseph Mayo, sent seven sons to the Revolutionary Army and only two returned, one of whom was Isaac Mayo's father, Isaac Mayo, Sr. The father's health was damaged; the other five died in the Battle of Long Island or in prisons.
