The limbs of our tree stretch across Tennessee and North Carolina for the surnames Biggs, Billings, Chapman, Newman; Iowa and the Czech Republic for the surnames Valvoda, Moravec, Svestka; New York and the present countries of Lithuania/Belaurus/Poland/Ukraine for the surnames Dlugatch/Douglas, Burstein,and Koty).
The Douglas/Dlugatch/Dlugacz branch comes through Ellis Island in 1911 from Grodno, Russia now Belarus. Tracing ancestors has been very difficult due to Polish and Belarus records being in Russina or Polish. The surnames in this tree include Burstein/Burstzejn, Chasan/Khazan and Koty/Kotovsky from Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.
The Chapman limb has been researched back to Francis Marion Chapman born in 1819 of Rowan Co, NC who married Mary Ann Biggs on November 13, 1842 in Tipton Co. TN. We are seeking more information on Benjamin Biggs, Mary Ann's father, as well as more information on Francis Marion's parents: Nancy Smith and Sterling Chapman.
The Newman line has been traced back to Walter Wallace Newman born circa 1823-26 in South Carolina who married Eliza E. White on October 30, 1844 in Madison Co.,TN and settled in Lauderdale Co.TN. Research is underway to discover their ancestors.
The Valvoda branch in the United States has been researched back to Joseph Valvoda born in 1821 who married Katharina Kukral on March 26, 1848 in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. They emigrated to the United States in 1865 settling in Howard Co.IA. Our Czech linage has been traced back to 1683.
