The Marcineks and Kupiecs of Ware, MA

Updated April 21, 2001

About Our Family Research

I am doing research on my family for two reasons: #1 - I have an interest in my family roots; since I have very little memory of many of them, I would like to learn as much as possible about them and the lives they lived. #2 - I would like to make a keepsake to my children so they can keep the memory of our family alive throughout the generations to come. I have been working on a family tree for the past year and would like to watch my progress. Hopefully, I can paste together some missing links.

I would like to thank my cousin John (paternal side) from New York for all the information he has contributed to get me started. Without him, I would have been totally lost...Thanks John. Also to my cousin John Edwin from Arizona who has filled in some blanks for me.

Jan Marcinek and Mary Mietla were my paternal grandparents. I do not remember my grandfather, since he died when I was 2 yrs old. I was only nine when my grandmother died and have very few memories of her.

Jan and Mary Marcinek were from Poland. Dziadek was born in Kupienin and Babka born in Brzeznica. They came to America, settled in Ware, MA and were married on January 22, 1898. They had seven children that I know of....Others may have died at birth or in early childhood. I only remember three of these children, my own father, Rudy, being one of them. The other two were my Aunt Mary and Aunt Victoria. The ones I don't remember but have seen pictures of were Stanley and Joseph.

My mother and father were divorced when I was only 3 or 4; I did not have the opportunity to become close to my fathers side of the family. Since my father died when I was only 27, I did not have a big interest in family roots at the time. I wish now I had. I would have had more knowledge than I have today of what his family was like. Today is April 10, 2000. How ironic for me to have created this website when I did. My father died 25 years ago today.

Mikolaj Kupiec and Sophia Wegiel were my maternal grandparents. I don't remember either of them. My grandfather died in 1944, before I was born. My grandmother died when I was 2 yrs. old.

Mikolaj and Sophia Kupiec were from Galicia, Poland. They had 15 children but 3 died at birth. I remember eight of them, one being my mother Stephanie. The others were my uncles Adam, Michael, John, Joseph, Stanley, Edward and Walter. The ones I don't remember either died when I was very young (Nellie, Millie and Paul) or lived their lives in Poland and never came to America (Thomas). At one time, there were eight brothers serving in the military during WWII; one in the Polish Army. It was a record for Ware, MA.

Since all four of my grandparents were from Poland, I am proud to say I am 100% full blooded Polish.

Family Photos
  • Dziadek and Babka Marcinek (paternal) circa 1920 (144 KB)
This photo was taken in their yard. It is the only picture I have of them together. They are pictured with three sons (Joseph, my father Rudy and Stanley) and one daughter (Victoria). The baby is possibly their grandson, Leon.
  • Dziadek and Babka Kupiec (maternal) circa 1924 (91 KB)
This is also the only photo I have on my maternal grandparents. They are pictured with their older children; the younger ones had not been born yet. (front row) Millie, Stephanie (my mother), Walter, Joe. (back row) Adam, John, Paul, Nellie.
