Descendants of Patrick Lenehan & Susanna Gavan)

About Our Family Research

As far as it is known, Patrick Lenehan and Susanna Gavan were married in the Church of the Anunciation, Chesterfield, Derbyshire UK on 21 June 1864 and left Ireland arriving in Australia in 1868. Patrick was a Miner. His parents were William Lenehan and Catherine Coleman, who had 5 children including Patrick.
Patrick and Susanna had 12 children from 1865 through to 1883. Their first child Catherine was born 29 March 1865 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire UK before they left for Australia. Twins William and Mary Ann were born 7th October 1868 and died 18 October 1868 in Queensland Australia.
Shipping and Migration records for them have been elusive to date.
My grandfather John (Jack) Lenehan, their 10th child, was born 18 December 1879 and died 14 August 1970 at Ipswich Qld. John married Ida Sophia Dyer b/17 September 1880; d/October 1966 at Ipswich Qld. and they produced 6 children, one of them being my father Ivan Douglas Lenehan b/7 May 1908 at Laidley Qld; d/13
July 1975 Ipswich Qld. Grandfather firstly worked in the local mines of Ipswich, and later was a long term employee of the Ipswich Railway Workshops up until the time when he retired.
The Lenehan family, of which I am a descendant, were well known for their devotion to their Roman Catholic Faith and the ladies of the family were great fashion statements of their day, taking great pride with their frocking and hair styles.
As the generations passed, the families grew smaller in size but the devotion and pride in themselves did not wane. Patrick and Susanna would be quite proud of their descendants today, as each grandchild/great grandchild and great great grandchild is upholding the tradition of a diligent worker in his or her trade or profession and displays pride in himself or herself as traditionally shown by their earlier descendants.
The Lenehan family of today is slowly losing their older descendants, but the younger ones can hold their heads high and be proud of their ancestry which they are passing on to their own families. Love, compassion, honesty and truth are the main factors that govern the daily lives of each and everyone who is proud to be a Patrick Lenehan and Susanna Gavan descendant.
Regular family gatherings of each family keeps the contact alive and well.
