Downing Families of NC, TN, MO, and CA

About Our Family Research


This is the Downing family beginning with John Downing resided Burke Co, NC in 1790 Census with sons James Downing, William H. Downing and Elijah Downing who all moved to Williamson Co, TN. After 1809 James Downing and wife Mary (Polly) Gardner Downing moved on to newly opened county of Lincoln Co, TN. Elijah Downing and wifes 1-Nancy Slack and 2 Sarah T.C. Harris ended up in Haywood Co, TN and William H. Downing stayed in Williamson and Rutherford Co, TN until his death in his late 90's in 1881. He was married to Sara Rucker of VA who died in 1840's in Williamson Co, TN. James and Mary Downing had children who both resided in Lincoln, Marshall and Giles Co, TN and other children moved on to Lawrence, Barry, Greene, other counties in MO and some of these went on to CA. They also have daughters - Agnes Nancy Downing who married Absoleum Collins and moved to MO and Missonniah Downing who married Edmund Ramsey (Ramsay) in MO and died their in 1856. Also another son Samuel Downing first went to MO and reported to later went to KS - wish to make contact with all and all Downing or allied lines - jeanniedowning@hotmail.com
