Searching for the African American Colbert Connection

Updated July 24, 2002

About Our Family Research

The Colbert family is the joy of my life. God has blessed me with relatives to tell me oral histories about my great grandfather John Colbert: the rabbit story in childhood, the 100 bales of cotten in his prosperous years, his love for his sister
Lourainney Ross and love for family. It is believed that the Colberts were enslaved first in Va., yet I haven't found any proof. The Green was assigned to serveral children suggesting that the name has some link to our ancestry. The one story that I am to help me find our link is that told of Aunt JoAnna Greene
who was John Colbert's father Green's sister.
The historiography has been done by the grace of God, Aunt Lola,
Carrie Lou ( Green's brother Tob's daughter of CT), Aunt Mollie and a host of cousins of the Ma Julia line. My dream is to achieve what Mr. Hailey achieved a family link to Africa... a sense of completeness and to find where this united spirit in God came from. Reunions are held for the African American Colberts in Buena Vista, Ga every other year... next one in 2004
WHat I am researching is a link to the Colberts on slave ships
to connect Va to Ga.... Possible slave masters are Colbert, Greene, Daniels I am looking for help. Thank you
Gordon Drewery Jr.
great grandson to John Colbert great grand aunt Lourainney
