About Our Family Research

The earliest Dunford that I am aware of, entered Jamestown, Virginia aboard the English ship " BONA NOVA " in November 1619.
Thomas (Dunsford) Dunford, 22, an english gentleman from Devonshire came to this country from England.
This is recorded in the Ferrar Papers 1590-1790, maintained at Magdalene College, Cambridge University, England, and in the book
Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers, 1607 -1635

Later in Cumberland County, Virginia, sometime near 1690,
Thomas Taylor Dunford - B-1680-90, married Elizabeth Keeling in 1712, in Cumberland County. Thomas Dunford is thought to have died between 1730 -1760.

Later we find Philip Dunford, thought to have been born between 1714 - 1720 and died about 1763. I cannot todate, make a definite connection between Thomas Taylor Dunford and Philip, but I suspect that Thomas Taylor Dunford, is Philip Dunfords father.

Philip married a woman only known as Elizabeth, who lived until 1804, and together they had 3 children. I have confirmed that Philip and Elizabeth are the writers G,G,G, Grandparents.

Philip and Elizabeths children:

son - Philip Dunford, born 1750, and who was captured during the battle of Charleston, SC. IN 1780, and later died as a prisoner aboard a British prison ship during the American Revolutionary war.

son - John Dunford, born between 1755-59 and who also was captured along with his brother in 1780 in Charleston, and he too died on the dispicable British prison ship, probably the same ship as his brother in the American Revolution. Both young Dunford American Patriots were members of the 4th. Virginia Regiment, Continental line.

Their third Son - William Fuqua Dunford born Aug. 11, 1760, was born too late to be a part of the Revolution, survived and carried on the Dunford family name in Cumberland County, Virginia as a farmer.

The the elder Philip, owned 200 acres of land he purchased on Aug. 8, 1758. This land was along Pidey Rock Creek, a tributury of the Willis River. The land was bordered by Archibald Carey's, " Rolling Road " Anthony Travillian, Robert Trent, William Daniel, The Glebe and the Hyco property. Today this land can be found between State roads #628 and # 629 as part of the Cumberland State Forest and this land became William Fuqua Dunfords land .

Son William Fuqua Dunford Married Mary "Polly" Cheshire on Sept. 26, 1793. His wife Mary Cheshire was born Sept. 16, 1757, and died in 1842, the same year as her died.

They had the following children.
Philip Tennyson Dunford born. Aug. 19, 1794 died Feb. 1, 1872
William "Billy" Fuqua Dunford born Sept. 25, 1796, died ?

The elder William Fuqua Dunford and his family, farmed this land, and later in 1842, when he was 82 years old he died, and is believed to have been buried somewhere on this property in Cumberland

In 1812, son Philip Tennyson Dunford, joined the Virginia Militia as an 18 year old drummer boy in Captain Benjamin Allens, 17th. Regiment, 1st. Brigade, under General William Truehart until 1814.
side note: Captain Allen was born in Hanover, County, lived and died at thier family place, "Allengate" in Cumberland County in 1859

Later Philip Tennyson Dunford Married Ann England on Dec. 5, 1816
Anne England was born Aug. 19, 1779 and died Jan. 24, 1824

Philip and Ann had two sons.

William Tennyson Dunford born May 26, 1819
Edward Burch Dunford born May 24, 1822

Tragically Philip's wife Ann died at the age of 44, leaving him with the two boys ages 4 and 20 months. Thankfully Ann's two maiden sisters, Lucy and Betsy moved to the Dunford farm to help run the household and raise the boys.

In 1842, at the death of William F. Dunford, the land was devided between son Philip Tennyson Dunford who received approxamately 108-1/2 and son, William "Billy" Fuqua Dunford received 78 acres.
No idea why it does not equal 200 acres.

Philip Tennyson Dunford eventually sold
