This web site is dedicated in loving memory of my father, James Little Dunsmuir born: July 1928, Wishaw, Scotland; died: January 1990, Wishaw, Scotland at the age of 61.

My father started the Dunsmuir family tree research following a visit to California and particularly a visit to Dunsmuir House in Oakland which was built by Robert Dunsmuir, the Coal Baron, for his wife. The unfortunate story goes that Robert Dunsmuir died before the house was finished and never set foot in it. My father - he was told by the caretakers - was the first genuine Dunsmuir (ie. born a Dunsmuir) to ever set foot in Dunsmuir House.

Following the trip, my father was intrigued by the story, and on his return to Scotland set about to trace his ancestral line in the hope of making a connection back to Robert Dunsmuir, originally from Ayrshire. Unfortunately he did not get very far with his research before his death.

In 1999 I decided to take up where he left off, and so far have managed to trace the direct line back from present-day Lanarkshire to Glasgow to Ayrshire in the 1740-50s and expanded outwards to many lines of the Dunsmuir family.

In the course of my researching (starting with IGI records for Scotland)I have built up a substantial database of records for Dunsmuirs (and various other spellings) for the whole of Scotland and the aim of this website is to share that information with any other interested parties and perhaps assist others in their research with the information I have.

This is just the beginning..........

I started this page 7 March 2001, but unfortunately my main tree file is too large to display. I have now begun the process of splitting the gedcom file and so far the information I have managed to split is shown below. The majority of the information I have has come from the LDS IGI files for Scotland.

  I managed to get this photograph from my great-aunt, but I have no idea why the photograph was taken! My great-grandfather, James Little Dunsmuir born: 23 February 1873, died: 19 February 1932, and after whom my father was named, is front right.
