GRADY Family of Rosebud, Texas

Updated March 17, 2001

About Our Family Research

The GRADY family of Rosebud, Texas dates from the early days of Texas. My Grandmother, Lena Sally Grady Wilkes, loved Rosebud and often spoke so lovingly the small town. She was a school teacher, who taught in Fort Stockton, TX for a time. Lena was raised in Rosebud and lived most of her adult life in Nocona and Wichita Falls, Texas. Lena died in 1969, and is buried in Wichita Falls, TX next to her husband. She married Thomas B. Wilkes, Sr. and they had four children: Polly Wilkes Williams; Cyrena Wilkes Wofford, Josephine Wilkes Bradley, and Thomas B. Wilkes, Jr. I am the daughter of Thomas B. Wilkes, Jr. My Father was born June 25, 1918; died March,1989 and is buried in Salado, TX along side my Mother, Katherine Smith Wilkes - who died January 31, 2000. I have so very little information of the GRADY my family. I remember well that my grandmother, Lena Grady Wilkes, spoke lovingly of being related to the TARVER and SCARBOROUGH families. Lena's mother, Betty Grady Atkins, is buried at Powers Chapel Cemetery, just outside of Rosebud. Betty Grady Atkins remarried - a Mr. Atkins - but, we know so little about him. Every Memorial Day Sunday, the families of those who are buried at this very quaint cemetery gather for a celebration of life and families. The small church and large grape arbor setting is such a peaceful, happy place to gather again and remember those we love. Lena had one brother, Carl Grady, who is buried at Powers Chapel. She also had two sisters: Rowena Grady and Rose Grady Turner. Two infant sisters of Lena's are buried along side their Mother, Betty Grady Atkins, at Powers Chapel. Our GRADY family is hoping to have a FAMILY REUNION at Powers Chapel for Memorial Day Sunday 2002. I would greatly appreciate anyone who knows about our family to share what information you have. I live in England and my dream is to find where the GRADY family originally lived in Ireland. I believe that many years ago, the family name was O'GRADY.
