Dunfords of Cumberland County, Virginia

About Our Family Research


Thomas Taylor Dunford first appeared in Cumberland about 1700-1710.
He married Elizabeth Keeling in 1712 in Cumberland.
The next known Dunford was Philip Dunford, Philip was born about 1713-1720 period. He married a woman only known as Elizabeth.
(note) Philip Dunford is my first verifiable Dunford ancestor in Cumberland, CO. Virginia, and he is my G-G-G-G-Grandfather.

Philip and Elizabeth had atleast 3 sons, Philip and John were either killed or died in the revolutionary war, and William Fuqua
Dunford who was born on Aug. 11, 1760 in Cumberland, and married
Mary, also called (polly) Cheshire on Sept. 26, 1793.
Polly was born Sept. 16, 1757.

William Fuqua and Polly had atleast 2 sons, they were
Philip Tenneyson, born Aug. 19, 1794 and died Feb. 1, 1872
Philip Tenneyson married Ann England Dec. 5, 1816.
Ann England was born Aug. 19, 1779 and died Jan. 24, 1824.

The other son of William F. Sr. was William Fuqua (Billy) Dunford jr. born Sept. 25, 1796 and died ??.
William F. JR. married Ann Barker Dec. 12, 1818.
Ann was born about 1794.

Philip Tenneyson served in the War of 1812,and Ann England had atleast 2 sons,
William Tenneyson Dunford Born May 26, 1819, and Edward Burch Dunford born May 24, 1822.

William Tenneyson Dunford served as a Confederate soldier and was married twice, first to Lucy Ann Goodman on Dec. 27, 1842, then he married Elizabeth M. Dowdy on
Oct. 31, 1849.
Edward Burch Dunford Married Lucy Mildred Glazebrook on Dec. 21, 1848.

William Fuqua (Billy) Dunford and Ann Barkers two sons were
John F. Dunford B- about 1820 and he later married Nancy Coleman on Jan 22, 1824 and died as a Confederate soldier in Gettysburg
in 1864.
The other son was James Spencer Dunford, James was born about 1831 and served as a Confederate soldier and married Elizabeth A. Osborne on Dec. 12, 1850.
