Dunfords of Cumberland County and Richmond, Virginia

The first known Dunford in Virginia (The New World) was Thomas (Dunsford) Dunford, an English Gentlemen that sailed into Jamestown Virginia ABOARD THE SHIP " Bona Nova " in November 1619.
Thomas was 22 years old, from Devon Sheir.

Reference the Ferrar Papers, Pepys Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge University, England.

Many years later, Thomas Taylor Dunford. appears in what was then called Goochland County, Va. which later became Cumberland County, Virginia.
Thomas Taylor Dunford was born between 1680- 1690, and died between 1720 and 1760.

He married Elizabeth Keeling in 1712 there in Cumberland Virginia.

In 1712, Philip Dunford was born, Philip who is who is my G-G-G Grandfather, and vhe died in 1763. On August 8, 1758, Philip purchased 200 acres of land that is located along what was then called Pidey Rock Run or Creek (now named Rock Point Creek) in Southam Parish, Goochland County,now it is Madison District, Cumberland County, Va. and is today located between County Roads #628 and #629 in the Cumberland State Forest. Here he farmed and raised a family, had son's John and Philip Dunford, 1750's - 1780 (both Died after being captured in Charleston, SC. during the Revolutionary War, and as a result of injuries or sickness while prisoners aboard a british prison ship) and their was a third son William Fuqua Dunford, who lived from 1760-1842 and was buried on the Dunford land in Cumberland County, Virginia.

and he lived on his fathers land and later had two sons Philip Tenneson Dunford 1794-1872, and William F. (Billy) Dunford,
1796-18xx.

In 1842 at the death of the first William F. Dunford, the land was divided between the two brothers, and here they continued to live for a number of years.

My G-G Grandfather William F. (Billy) Dunford raised his 4-5 children, two of them, John F. Dunford and brotherJames Spencer Dunford, my Great Grandfather at the time of the War for Southern Independence, each of these men joined the Confederate States Army.

Great-Great Uncle John F. Dunford joined Co. D of the 21st. Virginia Infantry. and Great Grand Father James Spencer Dunford, joined Co. D of The Prospect Rifle Grays, 18th. Virginia Infantry of Prince Edward Co. Va.

John F. Dunford died in 1864 at Gettysburg, G-Grandfather James Spencer Dunford was taken prisoner at Saylers Creek, Va. on April 6, 1865 and placed in prison in Point Lookout, MD. until after the war ended, and he then returned back home to Cumberland County, Va..


My Great Grandfather James Spencer Dunford and his wife
Elizabeth A. (Osborne) Dunford lived on his fathers land where they raised a family if Virginia, Jane, Mary Elizabeth, Catherine, Charles Davis (my Grandfather) William James, John Spencer, Edward Archer, Lemuel and Philip Welford Dunford.

My Grandfather Charles Davis Dunford b.1858 -d. 1935 and his first Mary Elizabeth Barker, lived in Cumberland where she died giving birth to their son, Charles Davis Dunford Jr. who also died at birth.

My Grandfather later married Willie Eugenia (Ranson) Dunford, B.1868-d. 1945, who is my grandmother.

They raised his two daughters Mary and Lucy along with their daughters, Ada Gertrude, Almira Cassel, Flossie Ann, Florine Jane, Pearl Eugenia, Pernell Ima, Ibra Kyle and my father Carlton Davis Dunford who are all now deseased.

The family slowly migrated to Richmond about 1929-30 and as of 1945 they had all left Cumberland.
