Richard M. Dunlap's Search for Immigrant Ancestors

Updated January 16, 2001

About Our Family Research

Identification and origin of my immigrant ancestors is a continuing process. Alexander Dunlap and his wife Ann McFarland probably came from County Antrim arriving about 1736 at the Calf Pasture River beyond the Blue Ridge Mtns of Virginia among the earliest settlers. The principle sources of information are the Journal of Ulster Archealogy, the writings of the Rev. George Hill and microfilm no. 123 of the Northern Ireland Public Record Office, Belfast, are valuable sources. The lastmentioned item identifies the names of about 3000 (mostly Dunlop relations) mainly around Northern Ireland, especially Ballycastle, not far from the world famous Giant's Causeway.

Another one is John Peacock, said to have been a Captain in the British Army in the early 19th century--the period of the Napoleonic Wars. He settled briefly (10 to 20 years) in Saint John, New Brunswick, and came to Williamsburgh, NY about 1825. John was probably a member of the family of Marmaduke Peacocke whose ancestors came to Ireland with Cromwell. Officer lists of that period show in a handwritten note added to the printed list that a Capt. Peacocke cashiered in January 1813. I saw the note but sadly have been unable to locate it again! If the date was 1815 I would know that he was Col. Mullens adjutant at the Battle of New Orleans. Mullens was court martiled six months later and I suspect that Peacocke was court martialed on board ship by Mullens soon after the battle.

Still more are the immigrant ancestors of Gen. Thos. Sum(p)ter. There are many Sumpters around Cambridge, England,in the early 18th century but no good leads.
