Edward Albert Head, the Alaskan Goldminer

Updated December 3, 2003

About Our Family Research

This is a history of the Head-Taber Family tree. Through the years this family has gone through many highs and lows. We have become a family of many different colors, ethic and cultural backgrounds. We started out as an Irish clan that came to American just prior to the American Civil War. This clan came to America through Canada and settled in the midwest of the United States.
Our family is full of creative, talented, musical and courageous people. Starting with the the gold miner's daughter who wrote poems in her spare time of raising 8 children on the plains of Nebraska, and Idaho. Two of her poems that I know of were published. One is named "The old Nebraska home". In honor of this piece of work I would like to share this with you. It is as follows:

THE OLD NEBRASKA HOME

We live in a home that is modes and old,
A house at the end of the lane,
Built by the hands of our forefathers bold,
Out on the Nebraska plain.

This old house was built for a home
But not by an architect grand.
It was built by him who tilled the loam,
Here on the prarie land.

This old house so sturdy and strong,
Has withstood the storms of time.
With the names of the great it doth belong.
It has stood so stately and fine.

Oh, that we like this house of time.
The storms of life can face,
Brave, Calm,Noble, Subline,
And calm the victors crown of grace.

Estella Head Taber
1935

When it comes to the Taber side of the family, no one is sure of the true family spelling of the Taber name. Back in the 1860's, in the beginning of the Civil War, there were two brothers that were divided in there polical beliefs. In this war of brothers, the family was split. One brother fought for the southern cause and the other for the northern cause. As a result of this one of them change the spelling of the name of Taber to Tabor. To this day no one knows the correct irish spelling of the name.
Edward Head was one of first goldminer in Alaska during the goldrush of 1898. He was a single father of a daughter named Estella Maye Head-Taber. He was involved in many adventures starting with one of the first racers in the dog sled races. He also became good friends with the writer Jack London. We became Mr. London's scout while he travel through Alaska. Edward had one of first claims in Alaska and ended up making a fairly good living from him gold mine claim. During the depression my grandparents we fairly well off due to the help they recieved from Edward. He made sure that his grandchildren and daughter was always well taken care of. During the many years of adventures, his daughter was raised mainly by his sister, because he wife had dies when Estella was very young.
