L.G.H. Greene's Residence Burns

Early last Monday morning the residence of L.G.H. Greene, who lived six or seven miles south of Erie, caught fire and burned to the ground. Most of the house-hold effects were saved, but everything upstairs was lost. The building was a good eight-room farm house and Mr. Greene carried $000 insurance.
Mr. Greene lost his wife by death a few weeks ago, and as he has been in very feeble health, his son and wife have been staying with and taking care of him. The family had just got up from breakfast, and the son and a hired man had started across the field to the former's farm. A man passing the house saw the fire issuing from the roof, gave the alarm, and part of the contents were thus saved.

Obit. RECORD February 16, 1923 from the Erie Record

HE WAS MORE THAN A PIONEER

L.G.H. Greene of Centerville Township lived 92 years of well spent, useful living
He was active in Civic, Religious and Political Affairs for More Than Half a Century Here

L.G.H. Greene, pioneer and beloved citizen of this section of Neosho county, died at his home in Centerville township, Wednesday morning, February 14, 1923. He was 92 years old at the time of his death.
For more than half a century L.G.H. Greene has been one of the outstanding citizens of this community. Coming to this country in 1868, and home steading just south of Excelsior school house, in Centerville township, he at once became one of the leaders in all civic, religious and political questions and he retained this leadership for many years. In fact during all the time that he was active in the affairs of his community, his county and his state, he was always found working for the right and he worked hard in all his efforts. One of the finest tributes that can be paid to any man is to say that he lived a long life and every minute of it was lived in a useful way and this tribute can be truthfully paid to the late L.G.H. Greene. He lived 92 years and each of these 92 years was lived in a useful way.
The late L.G.H. Greene was born in New Port, Ohio, his father being one of the settlers of that great state. He was married while residing in Ohio to Miss Beulah Huggins and shortly after their marriage they moved to Iowa, where Mrs. Greene died. A number of years later he married Miss Adelaide Miller at Hannibal, Mo., and with this wife he later located in this community. From Missouri Mr. and Mrs. Greene moved to Colorado and they resided in that territory for a number of years and during this time Mr. Greene was active in the political affairs of that territory. They resided in Colorado while the Civil war was going on and Mr. Greene was a member of the National guards from that territory but was never called into active service. It was from Colorado that they the Greene family moved to Kansas and homesteaded here in 1868.
The deceased is survived by four children. Frank Greene of Los Angeles, California; Elbert Greene, Mrs. J.A. Eaton and Mrs. Will Seibert, all of this community. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and was also a Mason. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at Excelsior church and were conducted by Rev. Nelson S. King, and burial was made in the cemetery at Galesburg by the side of his wife.
In the death of L.G.H. Greene this community and this county has not only lost one of its pioneer citizens, it has also lost one of its most active men for half a century; one who helped in a way that will never be forgotten to make this state the greatest state in the Union, and also to make this section of the state the best part of Kansas.

Last will and testament of L.G.H. Greene.
I, L.G.H. Greene, widower, of Centerville Township, Neosho County, Kansas, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do hereby make, publish and declare the following as my last will and testament to:
I give, devise, and bequeath to my daughter, Mrs. Emma Susan Seibert, of Centerville Township, Neosho County, Kansas, all my property, both real and personal, which I now own, or may die seized of, to her or her heirs, absolutely, and in fee-simple.
I have other children, and I have them all in my mind at the time of the making of this will, but I think I have heretofore sufficiently provided for them, therefore I five all my property to my said daughter, Mrs. Emma Susan Seibert, as above stated.
I request and direct that upon my decease all my just debts be pain, and that a proper tombstone, with a suitable inscription thereon, be placed over my grave.
I nominate and appoint the aforesaid Mrs. Emma Susan Seibert, as the sole executrix of this will, and request the Probate Court not to require to give any band.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 9th day of September, 1909
L.G.H. Greene
