The Conley Family: The Heritage of an Irish-American Family

Updated November 23, 2006

About Our Family Research

Descendants of Jeremiah O'Connolly Sr.from County Galway, Ireland to West Virginia and Akron Ohio

The history of the Conley Family is very rich. There are many lines of the Conley's in America; the clan we are from, descends from Jeremiah O'Connolly Sr. who was born in County Galway, Ireland in 1724. His son Jeremiah O'Connolly Jr. brought his family from Ireland to America, near Baltimore, then to Harrison County, Virginia (West Virginia) about 1789; about 50 years before the Great Famine and migration to America. My grandfather, Millard Filmore Conley, brought his family, including my mother, from West Virginia to Akron, Ohio in 1922.

From the various sources I used to compile this history, I found several discrepancies, so don't take everything in this file for gospel. I tried my best to uncover the most accurate details however. This geneology is far from complete, as I am always searching for other ancestors, but just click below on "The Descendants of Jeremiah O'Connolly, Sr." to learn about our ancestors.

The Connolly's (O Conghaile) of Monaghan appear to have descended from Cu Uladh MacMahon before the year 756. By the year 1100 Connolly was one of the Dynastic Families of Ireland. They are the 3rd most common family name in Monaghan, and by most accounts, were powerful, having had their own chieftain (Ua Connalaigh ...."the Connolly" roughly translated) by the early 1500's. The Connolly's also held many important positions during the 15-17th Centuries.
