My initial family history research began with the Martin Egli/Egle family at the Schloss Obermoensheim,Germany (1792f), whose descendents are found in the US and Canada in the early to mid 1800's. Various spellings of the surname are found among these families (Egli, Egle, Egly, Egley), thus the title of this page. In search of family connections I have compiled names and files of various families who arrived in the US and Canada from Germany, France and Switzerland.
My research has now broadened to include a search for Egli ancestors in the Alsace of France and Switzerland. Both family legend and historical data point to an origin in Switzerland in the early 1600's. The Martin Egli family had religious and family connections to the Amish / Mennonite settlements in Germany and the Alsace of France. Historically this links them to the Anabaptist movement in Switzerland that dates back to the Reformation. There were Egli Anabaptist families in the Zuricher Oberland and in the Bern area in the 1600s.
I will be happy to communicate via E-mail with anyone who is also researching the Egli / Egle / Egly surname. -Duane L Egle
