About Our Family Research

Egusquiza History
What information I have on the Egusquiza Surname I owe thanks to Javier Egusquiza. Javier Egusquiza is my 8 th cousin who lives in England. With out his hard work I would not have the information I have place on the Egusquiza Web Site.
My Family comes from the small village of Lauquiniz, Spain which was 6 miles - as the crow flies- north of the center of Bilbao. It was the cradle of our surname and stood through the centuries right up to 1967 when it was demolished.
My grandfather Jose Ramon de Egusquiza e Iturriaga was born on the Egusquiza farmstead in February 23, 1872. Grand father married Bernarda Bilbao y Aguirre , who was born in Lujua. She was the daughter of Mariano Bilbao and Manuela de Aguirre y Aurrecoechea, a native of Zamudio. My Grandfatherwas a carpenter.
My grandparents had eight children. The first were a set of twins Jose and Jesus Egusquiza y Bilbao born in Lujua, Spain ( November 2, 1899). The Family moved to Sondica were Maria Juana (B. March 30, 1903) Rufino, my father, (B. January 31, 1905), Lorenzo (B. September 3, 1906), Jose Cruz (B. October 1, 1910), Alipio Maria (B. August 15, 1912) and Mari Segunda (B. April 24, 1914)I was told that Jose, Maria Juana, Jose Cruz and Mari Segunda all died during child hood.
My Grandfather moved from Spain in 1920 to Mountain Home, Idaho were he was a stone mason till his death in March 31, 1925.
My Grandmother pass away in May 7, 1956, my father Rufino "Rufus" died June 10, 1983, Uncle Jesus "Jess" died 1979, Uncle Lorenzo "Larry" died Sept 14, 1971 and Uncle Alipio " Leap" died August 13, 1997.
My grandfather had three brothers and five sisters. The oldest being Juan Francisco de Egusquiza e Iturriaga, born may 6,1862 on the Egusquiza farmstead. Like his father he also became a carpenter and married Antonia Vidaurrazaga y Altonaga, who came from the village of Erandio. Francisco died July 21, 1923 and is buried in Morris Hill Cemetery Boise, Idaho.
Francisco and Antonia had eight children, one of whom, Jose Ramon Egusquiza de Vidaurrazaga. born February 16, 1892, migrated to California and had descendants in California.
The other brothers and sisters, of Jose Ramon and Juan Francisco Egusquiza e Iturriaga are Juan Tomas ( B April 12,1864) and married Lorenza Uriarte y Garay, from Munguia and went to live in Erandio where they had four sons and three daughters.Josefa (B. April 22, 1866), Mangels (B. April 23, 1868), Eusebia (B. July 5, 1870), Josefa Bernarda (B. March 19, 1874), Hilaria (B. May 17, 1876), and Leonardo (B. November 6, 1878) who was the last to be born on the Egusquiza farmstead in Lauquiniz.
In a letter from Javier Egusquiza, he states that the number of people with the surname of Egusquiza worldwide is some where between 4,000 to 5,000. The majority of them are still in the Basque Country, some though out Spain, North and South America, France, Italy, Germany, England,Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. Javier also says that 70% of the 4,000 to 5,000 Egusquizas descend from the Lauquiniz farmstead. About 15% descanted from the village of Lezama farmstead. The male line of the same surname became extinct there over 200 years ago. The house still stands active and in good condition. Their descendants are spread over Vizcaya, Spain and the Americas.
Roughly 10% decent from ancient farmstead located in Hernialde in the province of Guipuzcoa, where the Egusquiza surname was lost more then 300 years ago. Their descendants today spread over the province of Navarra, Guipuzcoa and across the border to the French Basque province of Laburdi.
Javier has extracted all his information from parish records, in particular Books of Baptisms that go back 500 years in some cases. Javier also states in his letter that he has collected information from over 6,000 baptismal inscriptions of Egusquizas from all times.
I am trying to trace the Surname of Egusquiza here in the United States. Thank You Paul
