About Our Family Research


We are looking for all ancestors and descendants of Herman Ernst (a.k.a. Herman Von Ernst)(b.1815) in the Kingdom of Hannover, in the town of Hildesheim, Germany. Herman Ernst was married to Luissa (last name unknown). He moved to the USA and settled in New York City and by the 1870 census he was a citizen and owned / operated a hotel located at 80 East Broadway in lower Manhattan in NYC.

They had at least one son: Herman C. Ernst (b.1837 in Germany, d. 1/30/1912). Who moved to the USA, settled in Staten Island, NY, and married Mary E. Goblet (b. abt 1845 in Paris, France, d. 6/11/1923). They are both buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.

Their children were Herman C. Ernst (b.1876, wife's name was Mary, d. 1949 - Staten Island, NY); Francis Ernst (wife's name was Marie), Ferdinand Ernst (wife's name was Gertrude), Mary Ernst (married an Almeier), Anna Ernst (married James Brown), Beatrice Ernst (married John Heffernan),and Vincent Aloysius Ernst(b. 2/21/1881 in Staten Island, NY, m. 1902 to Minerva Wood, d.2/1962).

Also looking for descendants of Thomas Tierney and Bridget Quigley (both were from Parish of Ennis, County Clare, Ireland). Their children included Thomas Richard, Daniel, Michael, Bridget, and Mariah.

Also looking for all descendents and ancestors of Richard Shaffer. He fought in the Revolutionary War and received a land grant in Sumner County, TN after the war. He was a land surveyor in the the North Carolina region which later became the state of Tennessee.

Richard Shaffer married Elizabeth Gambrel (Gambill)(b.1772, North Carolina, m.10/21/1789, d.1795), in Davidson County.

They had at least one son: Captain Josiah Love Shaffer who married Elizabeth Binkley (Binggeli) (b.1789 - North Carolina, m.5/21/1808 in Nashville, d.1/3/1868 in Nashville), and at least one daughter: Sarah who married Henry Cromer in Nashville, TN.

Looking also for all descendents and ancestors of Joseph Hickcox (d. 1823 in New Orleans) and Sally Keith of Boston, Mass. They had 5 children:

Daniel Tilton Hickcox who married Helen Maria Whitney (born in Akron, OH, descended from the Whitney line of Massachusetts and the Whitney line from the River Wye (England 1640).

Other children of Joseph and Sally Hickcox were Josiah, Watson, Harrison, and Lucy Hickcox.

Daniel Tilton Hickcox and Helen Maria Whitney had seven children including Josiah Finley Hickcox (b.9/24/1842 in Middlebury, Ohio, d.6/23/1934 in Attleboro, Massachusetts) who married Emma Cunningham (b.1/11/1858 in Richmond, Missouri, m. 1/11/1882 in Slater, MO, d.3/13/1931 in Anna, Illinois).

Emma Cunningham descends from Oliver Cunningham (b.1799 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania) (also the Cunningham line of Edinburgh, Scotland) and Hannah Ordway (b.1818 in Amesbury, Mass., m.1843, d.1901). Hannah was the first Valedictorian of Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.

Hannah's first ancestors in the United States were James Ordway, b.1620 in England, who married Ann Emery in 1648 (born in England), d.1687.

Josiah Finley Hickcox and Emma Cunningham had seven children including Everett Horton Hickcox (b.1/30/1897 in Cairo, Illinois, d.1/21/1954 in Nashville, TN) who married Margaret Ruth Winter (b.2/6/1897 in Cairo, IL, m.2/12/1919 in Cairo, d.5/30/1981).

Margaret Ruth Winter descends from Claude Winter, Sr. and Hannah Gerrin (father was William Gerrin). Claude Winter, Sr. descends from Henry Winter (son of Robert Winter and Jane) (b.8/15/1826 in Portsmouth, England; married Margaret Murdock of New York on 8/13/1851).

Other surnames in our family include: Foley, Brady, Clark, Dorris, Frost, Coe, Cavert, Binkley, Binggeli, McNaughton and Shivers.
