The Ewen Family of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Updated January 15, 2007

About Our Family Research

I have just started researching my family name and know very little, except that there were Ewens living in Germany since the 17th century. My name is Erika Frieda Katharina Ewen and I was born on June 1, 1960 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. My parents are Erika Edith Josephine Ewen (nee Schulz)(September 26, 1922 - ; Pampeln, Latvia; of Baltic-German descent) and Ernst Ewen (1919 - September 8, 1970; Cologne, Germany). I have a brother named Gerhard Alexander Ewen (June 28, 1954 - ; Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada).

I was named for my two grandmothers, but only knew my grandmother (Frieda Schulz nee Conradi; May 13, 1901 - 2002; Latvia) from my maternal side. My grandfather on my maternal side was Alexander Schultz (Latvia). My grandparents on my father's side were born in Cologne, Germany. My grandfather and father emigrated to Chile about 20 years before WWII and became Chilean citizens. My father was Roman Catholic and my mother was Lutheran. They married in Chile in 1953, butleft about a year later because Pinochet came to power. They moved to Winnipeg and then later in the 1950s to Edmonton.

I have been told by (former?) members of the Clan Ewen Society that there was a Village called Ewen in Germany in the 17th century. I am trying to trace this information and also the connection back to Scotland/England. I know there is a Village named Ewen in England and will be visiting it this summer. I am also trying to find an address for the Clan Ewen Society so I can join it again. I have not heard from this Society since 2004 and do not know whether it still exists. I would appreciate receiving any of the information indicated above and any other information on Ewens who lived in Germany and likely emigrated there from Scotland/England (perhaps in the 17 C. or later).

I believe I am both German and Scottish by descent, as I like Single Malt Whiskey and Schnapps (and, of course, beer, eh! because I'm a Canadian, eh!).
