My name is Alexander Exum. I am the grandson of Alex Exum and Maggie Lowe Exum of Tarboro and Halifax N.C.Susan Exum was my mother and Clarence Holly was my father. I have three sons, Alex, Altair and Lowen Exum. I am a writer, have traveled extensively around the globe, and now live in Brazil. I have researched our family history and have strong indications that we and our name originated in Axum,Ethiopia, and somewhere alomg the way was transliterated into Exum. I've found Exums in Ghana, Somalia and Sierra Leone, who have a oral history that connects them to Axum. I also found incomplete records in Jamestown,Virginia that suggest that we came from England as indentured servants in the late 1700s and was forced into slavery. Our ancestors ended up as slaves, owned by a Polly Exum in Edgecomb County, N.C. There are white Exums who claim that the name is of English oriigin. I have no quarrel with that, except that it could posssibly have come from someplace else. A great Aunt, named Carrie Exum Lyons, who was the 'griot' of her generatiom, spent three days telleing me the oral history of our line just before she passed. She also told me that I had been selected as the griot of my generation.Much of of what she told be I've been able to confirm. Michael Jordan, the basketballer, is a direct cousin of ours.
