Three Generations From Slavery

Updated July 3, 2001

About Our Family Research

This has been a long off and on process regarding the history of my family. And I guess it really started in 10th grade with a History class, and having to do a family tree project. The family Bible just didn't hold enough information for me. I have found that it tends to be a little more difficult when the family that you are researching is African American. I really got frustrated when I could only go as far as my great grandfather, John Pious Fenwick, because looking for slave schedules, and associations took a lot of time and effort. My father joined the Service in 1942, and after he was discharged, he and my mother, Ruby Wilton Robinson married, and moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Many others of the Robinson and Fenwick Families left Springfield (Fenwick's) and Bardstown (Robinson's) in Kentucky and moved to Louisvlle, Kentucky or to Indiana.
I feel that now is the time to put forth some real effort in talking to family members, and historians, in order to make a difference to my nieces and nephews regarding my generation being 3 generations form that of slavery. My father was a good source of information regarding what he knew of Pious, and his aunts and cousins. I will soon be making more trips to Washington and Nelson Cos.,in Kentucky in order to increase the information that I already have gathered regarding the people that came before me, by going to family reunions, talking to relatives, and going through tons and tons of information.
