My family primarily comes from the corners of Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. As many of you know, the records for families in these areas are far from perfect. Many names are used over and over through the generations. Many times fathers died and mothers remarried taking the new husbands name for their children making accurate lineages next to impossible. However, being the addiction that it is, I will endeavor to continue the certainly hopeless task of tracing my heritage. I already know given the locations of my ancestors of the last 100 years, that they were freedom loving, independent people. The Appalachian Mountains were, and in some areas still are, a remote region of this country. Pioneers set out to find a place to raise families and live by their own rules. I know it couldn't have been easy, but I still envy their self-suffiency and strong sense of family. These days so many families are separated by so many miles, cousins seldom know cousins. In some cases brothers and sisters no longer even keep in touch. It saddens me to think how unimportant family ties are becoming in this world. I guess doing genealogy research helps me to feel more connected. I welcome any help or comments concerning my family lines. I know we all are family if we trace back far enough.
