James was listed on the census as a farmer He appears on the 1840 Rappahannock County Census. He and his wife and children appear on the 1850 Rapp. Co. Census. He appears on Culpeper County Census from 1860-1900.
Mary, his wife, died some time after the 1880 census, James was listed as a widower on the 1900 census of Culpeper Co. and was living with his grandson J. "Walter" Spicer. Walter is also referred to as Ward. Ward was listed with his wife Nora and son Cecil on the 1900 Culpeper Co. census.
