My great grandfather's name was Robert Fitzgerald, he was married to Johanna Herlihy. To my knowledge they both lived in Co. Kerry Ireland and family legend in Australia has it that they came from around Brandon or Cloghane on the Dingle peninsula. They had at least one child (probably more) that child was my grandfather, Thomas who came to Australia in about 1878.
My grandfather Thomas Fitzgerald lived at first in South Melbourne then later in Brunswick. He married Johanna Lennon from Carlton in Victoria Australia and they had 11 children the last of which was my father Gerald Bede Fitzgerald.
He married Marjory Carter, my mother and they had 5 children I am the middle child.
I recently travelled to Ireland, to Brandon on the Dingle Penisula as this is where I beleive that my Grandfather and other forebears came from.
We visited St Mary's Church in Castlegergory and looked at the Church records but alas we could not find any trace of my grandfather. I should at this time we had little information about great grandfather and knew nothing of the Herlihys.
I am still trying to confirm the existence of my relatives in or around the peninsula.
The Herlihy side of the family in Ireland also came from Co.Kerry. The connection is as follows.
The obvious connection is that my great grandfather married a Herlihy but there are other connections.
When my grandfather got married in Australia on 2/2/1884 the witness to the marriage was Thomas Herlihy who worked with my grandfather as a railway track worker.
Thomas Herlihy also married in February 1884 on the 23rd of the month to Elizabeth Lennon the sister of my grandmother.
I have often thought that Thomas could be the younger brother of my Great Grandmother Johanna Herlihy or perhaps the son of one of her sisters therefore making Thomas either the uncle or cousin of my grandfather.
Thomas Herlihy's father was Donald Herlihy and he was married to Kate O'Donnell. Again it would appear that they also came from Co.Kerry Ireland. This information I got from the wedding certificate of Thomas and Elizabeth Herlihy.
