The SHATTLES family of Upson County, Georgia begins with John and Barbara (Blackwelder) Shattles who married 28 Dec 1808 in Cabarrus Co, NC. They had the following children: Mary (Polly) born ca 1809 NC (married John McGraw) Catherine born ca. 1810 NC (1st married William Riley 2nd married James Harvill) Florateen (Flory) born ca. 1812 NC (mar. John and Barbara Shattles lived in Upson and Monroe Co, GA. They died in 1869 and both are buried in the Alford/Brasselle/Shattles Cemetery in Pike Co, GA.
David Wesley Shattles of Perry Co, MS was thought to be a child of John and Barbara Shattles, but in 2008 it was discovered that his mother is probably Mary Shattles, daughter of John and Barbara Shattles. Mary later married John McGraw of Upson Co, GA. Mary apparently had David W. Shattles(ca. 1829)before she married John McGraw in 1831. In 2008 it was proven by DNA that David was fathered by a son of Moses Hattox and Rachel Coe, of Upson Co, GA. The Hattox sons were: John, Philip, Elijah, James, and Gabriel Hubbard Hattox. David migrated to Perry Co, MS. He married Elizabeth Palmer in Jackson Co, MS in February 1854. David and Elizabeth Shattles had the following children: Mary Delphia born 26 Nov 1854 (mar. Alexis Gabriel Martin) Sarah born ca 1856 (died young) George Washington b.17 July 1858 (mar.Mary Elizabeth Lambert) John Wesley born 18 Dec 1859 (mar. Ida Pearce)
David Wesley Shattles died 26 July 1864 at the Marine Barracks Hospital in New Orleans, LA during the Civil War. He is buried in Chalmette National Historical Park, sect 49, grave 3838. Elizabeth Palmer Shattles is buried in Brooklyn Cemetery, Forrest Co, MS.

David Wesley Shattles, originally of Upson Co, GA, settled in Perry Co, MS where he married Elizabeth Palmer in 1854. He was the illegitimate son (suspected but not proven) of Mary Shattles, daughter of John and Barbara Shattles of Upson Co, GA. His father was an unknown son of Moses Haddox and Rachel Coe, of Upson Co, GA.

John Shattles of Pennsylvania married Barbara Blackwelder of North Carolina, 28 Dec 1808, in Cabarrus Co, NC. They migrated to Upson Co, GA in the 1820's and lived most of their life there. They both died in 1869 and are buried in the Alford/Shattles/Brasselle Cemetery in Pike Co, GA.

David Wesley Shattles of Perry Co, MS died in the Marine Barracks Hospital in New Orleans of malaria on 26 July 1864. He is buried in Chalmette National Historical Park in New Orleans, Section 49, Grave 3838.

This photo is believed to be that of Barbara Blackwelder, who on 28 Dec 1808, married John Shartle/Shattles in Cabarrus Co, NC. The photo was found in the Album of Lucinda Kennedy, wife of John and Barbara's son, George Washington Shattles. The photo was labled "Grandma Shattles". The photo album is of the 1850 circa.

The Alford/Brasselle/Shattles Cemetery is located on the Melton Farm (private land) on Dripping Rocks Road in Pike Co, GA. It contains graves of Britton Brassell and his wife, Ladicy Davis. Also in the cemetery are his descendants, mostly unmarked, and unmarked graves of John and Barbara (Blackwelder) Shattles and James Monroe and Suzanne (Davidson) Shattles. Both the Shattles family and the Brassell descendants placed markers there in 2003 and 2001 respectively. The Shattles family had the graveyard signage made and the county fenced the cemetery in 2006.
