Greetings to all Fonda Family members who are exploring or researching their lineage; and to those who are performing related searches or are just browsing... I had a lot of fun putting this report together, and I was gratified to find so much information, thanks to some excellent previous work, collaboration with fellow researchers, some great library resources and the ever-expanding Internet mass of information. The Fonda Family in America has a rich heritage and I was struck by the many stories of perseverence, integrity, commitment and achievement. I hope you will find this report useful and may others continue to build upon this genealogy database.
There are currently over 2800 Fondas in the tree (4400 people total), with another 1100 Fondas identified, but not yet placed (strays). This study is limited to just the Fonda surname in the United States, so wive’s parents and daughter’s children are not included. This is believed to be the most complete compilation of Fonda surname genealogy to-date, however feedback from others is needed to determine if it is the most accurate. Open use and sharing of this information is encouraged, but please give proper credit where due.
A list of references is provided herein (www.fonda.org/references.htm). I used all of those sources completely, patching together and cross-referencing as much as possible. I did not detail all the specifics in the individual records, because my goal was to assemble a broad map of the family lineage rather than to document each individual family tree. That would take much more time and effort than I am able to devote to it. (I am a Chemical Engineer).
I have shown some information for individuals, such as census, baptism, marriage, military, social security and cemetery records; but in many cases I cannot say exactly which specific document a given record is from. I am willing to fill in any details that people can provide and to keep the website up for reference and for others to discover and utilize. I am continually finding more and more information, particularly with the more recent generations, and updates to the website are frequent.
I hope this can get genealogy researchers pointed in the right direction to launch more specific investigations into their immediate family ancestors. Although I researched everything currently available in the public records, more becomes available every day. This project will never be totally complete, but I am happy that it has come together to this extent so far.
The message boards on Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com are good places to ask more specific questions. The latest update of these files will be kept available here (www.fonda.org). Please send any inquiries or comments to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
