THE SPIRIT RUNNER

Updated December 5, 2005

About Our Family Research

According to Taos Indian Legend, when a young brave gives up control of his life and lets the horse lead galloping down Taos mountain in the dark, his spirit and the spirit of his ancestors becomes one with the horse. The ride is called, The Spirit Runner. Doing the research was like galloping down Taos mountain after dark - not knowing where you are going - but giving up control to discover that you become one with those you searched for. You become the voice of your ancestors for your children and children's children when you tell their stories.
Our stories begin in Flå, Norway where my Vold-Gandrud great grandparents documented history stretches back to at least 1200 AD.

The story, The Spirit Runner North documents my grandmother, Sithone Turvolds family who emigrated from Vik, Sogn. Her history dates back to the 14th century. My husbands family is also from Vik,Sogn and from Sognefjørd, NOR. It is fairly easy to find Norwegian documentation because they have not been bombed and the churches maintain good records.

The Spirit in the South is the compilation of my mothers family whose progenitors include a Swede, Peter Gunnarson Rambo who emigrated in 1641 to Wicacao, New Sweden (Philadelphia). Please keep this a family secret from my Norske ancestors. Interesting and well-known surnames include Millers of SC/GA/AR, Bankston, Ivey, Clark, Waller, Henderson, Lea, Sappington, Jarrett, Broooks and McDonald.

All of the information I have is posted online. I remain indebted to cousins, Mona Herrin, Pat Stevens, Wayne McDonald, Karen Buller, Ken Parker, Ken Hopperstad, Dave Rambo, Linda Miller and the rest of you who know who you are!

Blessings, CF
