 Includes NotesNotes for Robert Barbar:
The head of the Lancaster County Branch, was the second son of John Barber, from Yorkshire, England, and came to America to join his Uncle Robert Barbar of Chester, Pennsylvania about the year 1699, as an apprentice at the trade of shoemaking. At the death of the uncle, in 1708 the nephew inherited a considerable portion of the estate. (this part is taken from Robert Barbar's will) "And for want of such issue to the use of next heir male forever. Item I give to my said nephew Robert Barber all my lasts and half my working tools and when he starts up his trade I give him my brick shop standing at the West end of my said now dwelling house with free liberty of Ingress and Regress at all convenient and seasonable times unto my said dwelling house during my wife's life time to put fire in and feed the stove that is in the said shop."

While a member of the Board of Assessors of Chester County, he discovered the land of the Susquehanna which he later bought. In 1726 he took 500 acres of land on the eastern bank of the river, above where the town of Columbia now stands. He bought this land in August and the title runs - William Penn to George Beals, of Surrey, England, 17-18 of 11th month 1701. George Beals to Jeremiah Langhorne, 17-18 October 1718. Jeremiah Langhorne to Robert Barber 19-20 August 1725.

Just below where Columbia now stands, Robert Barber built his house, but the old building has now been torn down.

He was the first Sheriff of Lancaster County. He was one of seven men appointed to view and lay out a road from Lancaster to the division line between the counties of Chester and Lancaster. He was prominent in Cressap's Was, and even though he did not bear arms he was active in the interest of the Penns.

He was among the foremost men of Lancaster County in all public enterprises, but gradually went out of notice, and devoted the latter years of his life to the support of his large family.
