We are researching the life of Martin L.Franks and his wife Lula ,maiden name Lula Lent. Lula was born at Ridgeway Pennsylvania in about 1874. Her family was from New York. We have never known how she got to Texas as a girl of 15 years old.
Possibly she came with an older brother, though we have found no trace of him. Some of her family went back to New York from Pennsylvania. Some of the family, including her father, Nathaniel moved to Arkanses where he died in 1908.
Lula lived until around 1955. I knew her well as a child. She always said she was decended from Nathaniel Lent and that she was born in a wagon on the trip from New York to Ridgeway, PA.
During Lula's growing-up years her family owned a boarding house. That experience stood her in good stead during the two times she was widowed. During that time she was employed at a health resort not far from her home at Elkhart.
Martin L Franks was the grandson of Marshall L Franks of Virginia. His family moved to Alabama and then to Jacksboro Texas. While visiting cousins in the area, Martin met and married the young widow,Lula, who had four children at the time. Martin died during the first wave of the Great Infulenza epidemic.
