Notes for Anthony John Devereaux: Page 29, Nov 1, 1870 Census of Palamyra Township in the county of Halifax, NC, PO Scotland Neck Mrs. Ehatrice Parker Belshes a member of the family living in Richmond, Va has supplied the following information from her recent research on the family. She sent us the above listed Census Sheet and 2 pages of a Marriage Register from Halifax County, NC records. The subject pages from June 8 through Oct 10, 1882 and lists the marriage of Benjamin Davis to Elizabeth Devreaux (spelling is from the register. Our cousin also stated that Anthony John Deveraux purchased 219.5 acres in 1870 for $1900 (this information comes from either the bill of sale or deed she found in the County Court- house). Ehatrice surmises that the John Deveraux listed in the household on the census is the father of Anthony. She also surmises that Thomas P. Deveraux, the son of one John Deveraux, was the owner of Anthony. The Deveraux family was one of the wealthiest in Halifax County (had approximately 300 slaves and was worth $52,000 in 1870 which translates to about $5.2 million today.
