Born and raised in Durham, NC where he attended the Durham Public Schools. Served in United States Army during 1945 and 1946 with Japan being one of his duty stations. He received the Asian Pacific Theater Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Occupational Medal Japan decorations. After receiving an honorable discharge he completed his high school education. He worked for a period of time as a technical assistant at the Duke University Hospital and then worked as a Nursing Assistant at Veteran's Administration Hospital at Durham.
Marilyn and Myrtle Harris married in 1962 and the family with their 2 children relocated to Connecticut in 1975. He worked for Sikorsky Aircraft as a skilled mechanic and retired from that position in August 1991.
He was a loyal and faithful member of Dixwell Avenue United Church of Christ for the past twenty years and on the church's 173rd Anniversary Celebration he was honored for his many years of service. He was a Deacon and was serving his second term. He also was active as an User, a member of the Men's Choir and active participant in the Men's Network
