Stephan Gates-emigrant 1638, Hingham, MA aboard "Dilligent"

About Our Family Research


Our first emigrant in our Gates line was Stephan Gates, second son of Thomas Gates of Norwich, County Norfolk, England. Came to American on the "Dilligent", Captained by Master. With him came his wife, two sons, Stephan and Simon, and daughter Elizabeth. A son, Thomas, and daughter, Mary, were born later in ths country. His wife, Mary Vears, is sometimes called Ann Hill, which indicates she may have been previously married. Stephan Gates and Ann Vears were married May 5, 1628 at Hingham, England. She deposed in Middlesex County, MA, June 12, 1673 aged about 70 years, therefore born about 1603. Stephan was probably born about 1600 near Norwich. References to his descent are two Gates genealogies in the possession of Columbia University, New York, NY. Here it is:
Earliest recorded member is Thomas Gates, Esq. of Highcaster and Thurstenbie, Essex England, who was living in 1327.
William Gates, son of Thomas, above.
Sir Geoffrey Gates, son of William, married Agnes, daughter and heiress of Sir Thomas Baldington of Alderbury, County Oxford, England.
William Gates, son of sir Geoffrey and Agnes, married Mabel, daughter of Thomas Capdow and his wife, Ann, Daughter of Thomas Fleming.
Sir Geoffrey Gates, son of William and Mabel, married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Clapton.
Geoffrey Gates, son of Sir Geoffrey and Elizabeth, married _____Pascall.
Geoffrey Gates, son of Geoffrey above, married Jean Wentworth.
Peter Gates, son of Geoffrey and Jean, married Mary Josselyn.
Thomas Gates, of Norwich, County Norfolk, England, son of Peter and Mary.
Stephan Gates, son of Thomas, is the first of the family in American, and was the second son of Thomas.
