Both of my parents were born in this country, as were all four of my grandparents. With my great grandparents, it is a different story. My father's grandfather came from Bavaria to Philadelphia, met and married an Irish girl who was born in that city but whose parents were from Ireland. My mother's grandfather was from Ireland as was his wife. They met in this country. By chance or otherwise all of the great grandparents wound up in Louisville, Ky. When my Irish and German great grandparents first came to Louisville, they met with a rather hostile reception. There was at that time some animosity towards the growing number of immigrants, particularly from Germany and from Ireland. However, that animosity was lost sight of with the advent of the Civil War and its consequences.
