Gordon & Bev's Family Ties That Bind

Hi. We're Gillihans from Washington State and these are
the branches of our family tree complete with family photos.
We are researching the following names: On Gordon's side:
GILLIHAN-GILLAHAN, TAFEL, VAN BIBBER-VAN BEBBER-VAN BEBER, WOLF, KIRVES, STANTON, JONES, TADLOCK and BUSH.
On my side: FLANDERS, HILL, LIEN, SUMMERS, MCCLAIN AND PURCELL, HARGRAVE and HILL (Another line)
Some other family names are: SNOOK, EVANS, EWING and SESLAR.
We span a time period from the early 1600's to present day.
Our ancestors came from many foreign lands, NORWAY, GERMANY, IRELAND, CANADA ENGLAND and FRANCE.
I have been researching these lines for several years and I feel most of the information is accurate, however, I welcome any corrections or additions. Some family lines are fairly complete, others have gaping holes. I've discovered family I never knew existed and I've lost a few along the way. There are a few that just packed up and left town and were never heard from again. One of the advantages of posting this kind of information on the web is the vast audience it attracts. It's my fondest hope that through this posting we will find some of the missing branches of our family tree.
I've included some family photos from both sides of our families.
My Grandmother, Oline Lien came from Norway as a young girl and I have only recently found the family she left, back home so long ago. Presently I'm working on adding photos of Gordon's Mother's family, the Tafels who originated in Germany.
NEWS FLASH: We have found a missing link. We welcome to our family, Marie Lynnette and Dave May. Lynnette is a half-sister to Gordon, Wayne and Sandra. Lynnette and Dave live in Warrenton, Virgina and both work in the law enforcement field.
FOUND: As of today, November 13, 2003, we have found more of our missing relatives. Found is Pauline E. Gillihan, half Sister to Elmer and Gordon's Aunt. We now know who her Mother was and have met via e-mail, her daughters Melba and Billie and their families. We now also have photos of Grandpa William Andrew Gillihan and the rest of the gang.
We also have our first photo of Elmer Columbus Gillihan and his second wife, Nettie.

We have tried for years to find Gordon's Daughter Dusty but always hit brick walls. This summer....SHE FOUND US......Thanks to the power of the Internet...Now we have a whole new family and they were worth waiting for. Dusty and her Husband Dan have adopted 4 beautiful children. Sarah married Charles Flanders and they were my G-G-Grandparents, the parents of Oscar Peabody, then Frank, Mom, and me. The connection was made for me by Bevard Hargrave who is the real researcher. This is a photo of my Great-Granfather and his second wife, Hester Blair. His first wife, Lucy Mclain was my Great-grandmother. They were married in 1880 and she died bef. 1890. They were the parents of my Grandfather, Frank Flanders and Augustus Lowell Flanders. Her exact death date, cause of death and burial are unknown.

This was Dorothy Tafel's Grandfather George. While researching the Tafel line I made a startling discovery. During the Depressions he was sent to prison for stealing a cart full of cabbages. The family was told he was out of state working! His wife, Amelia divorced him while he was in prison but re-married him. This photo was taken during one of his annual hunting trips.

jUNE 14, 1893- Olive Vanbibber was indentured to A. J. Maurer- signed by Hester Hartley, Matron of the Warrick Co. Indiana Orphan's Home. An indenture was NOT an adoption. It was a way to get young, inexpensive household help. Olive was indentured twice during her stay at the Orphan's Home.

Bev's Great-Grandparents. Gjermund 1840-1904 & Anna Plassen Lien 1840-1892. Taken in Norway. The parents of Oline Lien. Anna was a Jordmor (midwife) in Norway. Family history states she was lost in a blizzard and froze to death trying to reach a patient.

Raymond was the youngest and only boy born to William Albert & Ann Mary Sutton VanBibber. Shortly after his birth, he and his siblings were abandoned at the Warrick Orphan's home in Indiana. They never saw their parents again.

Albert wearing his Civil War uniform. He served in the Indiana First Infantry Division as a bugler. He is buried in the soldier's section of Locust Hill Cemetery, Evansville Indiana. This was Dorothy's G-Grandfather. We think he was born in Germany but haven't been able to trace his ancestors.

This photo Of Olive and two of her children was taken abt. 1920. Olive Vanbibber was one of 5 children to be placed in the Warrick County Orphan's Home in 1880. After the birth of these children, William Van Bibber dserted his family. Soon after, Ann Mary (Sutton) Van Bibber took her children to the orphanage and never returned for them. They remained in the Home until they were endentured out or reached an age to be released, usually at age 13. The four girls all married and had families, however, Raymond, the youngest was never heard from after 1940 and is still among our missing persons. I have photo-copies of these children's orphanage documents and they are heartbreaking to read.
