We have been working on this research for about ten years, starting with research on the Bates family we received from members of that family. Edna Dullea Gillis has done much of the research on the Gillis side of the family, especially looking for information about Peter Gillis who left Nova Scotia for the Boston area, married and had one son, John Alexander, who was only 10 years old when Peter died. Peter's wife, Sarah, went back to Nova Scotia with her son, and John spent the rest of his life in Nova Scotia. He married Geraldine Bates and together they raised 13 children. One of his sons, John Joseph, immigrated to the Boston area as a young man, married, and raised his family here with Edna Dullea.
